Advertisers and marketers have been throwing
loud noises and flashing lights at consumers for some time,
and these techniques have become more and more blatant over
the years. I for one try my best to ignore every annoying
advertisement I see or hear on the television, radio or
internet, and I'm sure I'm not alone. Luckily for the sellers,
there is a different strategy out there that they can turn
to.
Scent Marketing is pretty much what it sounds like; using
pleasant and distinct smells to help sell products. The
sense of smell is much more difficult to block out then
audio or visual, and its been proven that smell has a strong
link to memory and how we feel about certain things. You
may have noticed how a certain department store, hotel or
restaurant has a distinct smell to it. This is not by accident.
By using Scent Systems and Scent Machines, businesses can
increase sales just by using different smells. For example,
a department store may use a scent machine to pump the smell
of fresh coffee into the air to sell more coffee, or a real
estate office may use Scent Systems to relax potential buyers.
Scent Marketing has been used for years, but I believe
we are going to begin seeing, or smelling more and more
of it.
